AFS provided registration, communications, and publications support for the Global Conference on Inland Fisheries at the headquarters of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome, Italy, in January 2015. Recommendations from the conference were then synthesized into The Rome Declaration: Ten Steps to Responsible Inland Fisheries. In 2016, the conference proceedings book, Freshwater, Fish and the Future, was co-published by FAO, Michigan State University (MSU), and the American Fisheries Society. The book debuted at the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) meeting at FAO headquarters in Rome in June 2016, and the ten steps outlined in The Rome Declaration were broadly supported at COFI. The next phase of the project involves regional downscaling of the recommendations.
